Commercial Director - Construction & Building Materials

Our client is a major group specialising in the construction materials sector. It is an iconic brand with an excellent and highly successful track record and is undoubtedly regarded as a market leader.

As a graduate calibre and experienced construction and building materials sector Sales and Commercial Professional you will take full responsibility for all aspects of the commercial sales function.
Reporting to the Business Unit Director, you will grow the business through strengthening of the brand, price and service led margin growth. You will develop and deliver market strategy and business plans, optimising the effectiveness of the UK internal and external sales force to ensure that our client maintains its optimum position as a leading supplier of core and value-added products and solutions to the housebuilder and builders' merchant channel.

To succeed in this role, you will be a highly visible, inspirational, and high energy sales leader with a track record of cultural, process and commercial sales improvement, change and transformation, team building, employee engagement and empowerment, within a dynamic growth environment.
You will lead a large field based commercial team comprising Territory Sales Managers, Key Account Managers, and Internal Sales. You will be responsible for Sales Force Excellence, ensuring the achievement of revenue targets and price levels and optimum utilisation of production and logistics assets and resources to achieve outstanding customer service and profitability.

The Role:
* Provide strategic leadership, vision, direction, and motivation to a national commercial sales team ensuring that revenue and profitability targets are met.
* Development of the sector commercial business strategy to meet volume and revenue budgets within cost budget.
* Analyse the market, developing strategies to combat threats and exploit growth opportunities. You will align short-medium term sales efforts to achieve long term strategic goals and corporate objectives.
* Development of national sales value propositions with marketing colleagues
* Development of key customer relationships at regional and national level with Director level decision makers within national housebuilder and builders' merchant channels.
* Lead negotiations of commercial sales and trading terms with national housebuilder and merchant accounts
* Presentation of MI and commercial strategy and initiatives to the Plc/Executive board.
* Management and development of the national and regional team of sales and key account managers
* Coordinate the activity of territory sales and internal sales with the management of national key accounts
* Work closely with Key Account and Territory Sales Managers in the development of account plans
* Ensure all commercial activity meets the highest standards of Competition Act compliance.

The Ideal Person:
* Excellent sales and negotiation skills at the most senior level of the UK Construction/Building Materials sector on a £multi million contract basis.
* Thorough understanding of the building materials market including housebuilder and builders' merchants' sector specifically would be a prerequisite.
* Strong team and business leadership skills including experience of leading field-based sales and account management teams.
* Proven track-record in managing change and delivering business improvements.
* Experience of National/Key Account Management and the development of Strategic Business Plans.
* Management of teams and the training and development of people.
* Experience of negotiating trading agreements at a senior level.
* strong analytical and planning skills gained in a highly metric driven environment.
* Familiar with presenting detailed business cases in relation to commercial strategies and initiatives
* Graduate calibre education. An additional post graduate qualification in marketing/business or a technical construction industry qualification would be highly advantageous
* Fast track, high potential career progression to date gained within a multinational/large corporate environment, able to apply "best practice sales and commercial management" within a dynamic industry sector.
* Excellent cross functional relationship building, team working, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills both internally and externally.
* Good understanding of construction materials production and logistics resource planning and capabilities to ensure that customer expectations and sales revenue targets are met.
