Our client has an opportunity, for a Group Procurement Category Lead with up to date experience of logistics procurement, predominantly road haulage including bulk tankers, with rail freight procurement experience highly advantageous, gained within a large, national multi-site manufacturing/processing or FMCG/Retail organisation or 3PL/4PL environment.


As a high potential you will bring your best practice procurement category management expertise to a market leading organisation embarking upon a major transformational change programme.  Operating as part of a large procurement team, you will be extremely adept at engaging, influencing and leading internal and external executive stakeholders through tactical, operational and strategic change.


The Role:

  • You will develop and implement a robust national strategy for the procurement of group logistics services across road haulage and rail freight, that optimises performance for the business in terms of cost, quality, delivery and responsiveness.
  • Full commercial management of nominated category, as subject matter expert for a substantial £multi-million logistics spend covering road haulage and rail freight.
  • Lead supplier RFx process, negotiations and contractual engagement and contract implementation.
  • Support the development and implementation of procurement category policies and system strategies to optimise tendering, contracts management, spend analytics and supplier performance management.
  • Develop excellent and effective collaborative relationships with key stakeholders and external providers to ensure strategic and operational needs are fully understood and incorporated. This will include regular supplier business reviews.
  • Development of long-term value generation and risk mitigation strategies
  • Delivery of projects and programmes to translate these strategies into validated cost savings in line with overall delivery objectives
  • Drive compliance to sourcing strategies in each Business Unit, proactively managing vendor performance
  • Harness supplier innovation to differentiate and drive competitive advantage thereby assisting revenue generation
  • Contribute to the development of the Procurement strategy by managing a long term pipeline of value delivery projects
  • Collaborate with and lead cross functional project teams to ensure strategies consistently and proactively align with corporate objectives.


The Ideal Candidate:

  • University degree educated.
  • Full or part qualified MCIPS advantageous.
  • Multinational/large corporate experience, able to apply “best practice category management” within a dynamic industry sector.
  • Experience of logistics category sourcing and procurement including road haulage and ideally rail freight services.
  • This experience may have been gained within a large multi-site FMCG or heavy industrial manufacturing/processing sector or national retailer or from a 3PL/4PL environment.
  • Experience of developing and deploying national category/procurement strategies cross functionally at regional/business unit level.
  • Track record or delivering fantastic results including but not limited to cost savings, with minimal oversight.
  • Strong track record of category/procurement efficiency improvement opportunities across processes, compliance, transactions, KPI’s.
  • Gravitas and credibility that may come from experience in a similar logistics category procurement role.
  • Commercially astute, with experience of assessing external supply markets and skilled in translating opportunities into long term strategies.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data, with strong financial /commercial focus whilst maintaining the “big picture” view.
  • Ability to lead, persuade and influence internal and external partners through a period of change, managing transformation tactically, operationally and strategically.
  • Commercial experience of advanced negotiations with senior stakeholders to deliver value objectives.
  • Innovative, creative and strategic thinkers.
  • Demonstrable experience of multi-site as opposed to single site/HO located stakeholder engagement and communication.
  • Well presented, confident demonstrating considerable gravitas and expertise as a logistics procurement subject matter expert.


There may be flexibility on the location of the role but you must live close to the main motorway, rail networks with easy accessibility to our clients HQ in Birmingham for weekly key stakeholder meetings.
